Before you build your brand, answer this one question
I speak to a lot of founders who say they want to build their reputation - but when I ask them why, they hesitate.
They know it’s important. They see other founders doing it. But deep down, they’re not sure if it’s worth their time.
Before you read further, ask yourself:
What do I actually want my personal brand to do for me?
Would you…
→ Close deals faster?
→ Attract better hires?
→ Be seen as a category leader?
→ Get more inbound customers or clients?
If you can’t answer this, that’s the real problem.
Because let’s be real - some reasons for putting yourself out there are completely invalid:
❌ Chasing likes and clout
❌ Trying to impress peers
❌ Covering up a weak business
This isn’t about ego or vanity metrics.
It’s about trust.
Because when people know you, like you, and trust you, everything gets easier:
→ Investors take your calls faster
→ More of the right customers come inbound
→ Hiring & retaining top talent becomes effortless
→ Speaking gigs, partnerships & media opportunities come to you
Your reputation is your leverage.
And if you’re not building it, you’re leaving opportunities on the table.
So Where Do You Start? (A Real Founder Example)
I was working with a founder recently, and we landed on this as their personal brand goal:
“I want to be recognised by the right investors, so that when it’s time to raise, I’m not approaching them cold - they already know who I am.”
Brilliant, right?
Because that goal is specific, strategic, and intentional.
Here’s how you can do the same:
→ What outcome do you want from building your reputation?
→ Who are the key people you need to know your name?
→ How will this make your life & business easier?
Once you answer these, you’ll have clarity on why your personal brand matters.
Without a clear goal, you’ll waste time on content that doesn’t move the needle.
With a clear goal, everything else becomes obvious.
Not sure what your personal brand goal should be? Let’s figure it out together.
I’m opening up a few free intro calls in March - no pitch, just a conversation to see if I can help. Book a quick chat below.
That’s it for this week, if this was helpful, forward it to a founder who needs it.
See you next Thursday.
Keep building,
