Building an audience is one thing...

Turning It into a community is another

One of the challenges I continue to hear is how to create an engaged community. As we know building an audience is one thing, but turning that audience into a community? That’s where the real magic happens.

Let’s be honest, the word "community" gets thrown around a lot, but here’s what I’ve learned from building many different communities for brands and individuals, it’s not about numbers; it’s about connection. And if you’re looking to create a group of people who are warmed up and ready to support your next big move, I’ve got some ideas for you.

Here are 7 ways to transform your audience into a loyal, engaged community around your personal brand:

1. Create a "Backstage Pass" Experience

Give people a peek behind the curtain. Share the wins, the struggles, and the decisions that keep your business moving forward. This isn't about perfection; it's about showing the real, unfiltered you. I’m thinking of launching a second newsletter in January that dives deep into my journey and business as a solo founder. Want in?

2. Host “Un-Workshops” and “Un-Conferences”

We’re all tired of standard webinars. Try something different - invite 5 people from your audience to a small group discussion on a specific topic. Keep it open, let them steer the conversation, and see how quickly people start showing up. Engagement is everything.

3. Form a “Community Advisory Board” (CAB)

Not your typical board. Think of it as a group of your most engaged followers who provide real-time feedback. This isn’t just about feeling important - it’s about giving your community a voice in your brand’s growth. This is something I did back in my agency days, and it worked really well - we called it the Slack Council, but I’m feeling CAB.

4. Develop a “Micro-Networking” Event Series

Big networking events are intimidating. Instead, create small, intimate gatherings - virtual coffee chats or in-person meet-ups. Keep it focused and watch how these close-knit groups build stronglr, more meaningful connections. I’m going to try hosting one of these each month moving forward. Let me know if you’re keen to join the first one in October.

5. Create a “Giving Circle” Around Your Brand

Encourage your audience to give back. Think about trading time or skills - like when I offered 30 minutes of my time to help someone with personal branding, and in return, they gave 30 minutes of their time to help me with a financial challenge. The exchange was incredible, and it fostered real connections based on mutual support. Shout out to Romesh.

6. Implement a “Brand Pilgrimage” Experience

Think about creating a unique experience tied to your brand. Whether it's a virtual tour, a run club, or a coffee walk - something that feels like an adventure. What’s an experience you can do with your audience?

7. Build a “Community Content Series”

Turn your audience into contributors. Ask them to write blog posts, share videos or even host a podcastt episode. Not only does this diversify your content, but it also gives them a chance to shine. Anyone want to share their story in my next newsletter? Happy to profile you and your business if it feels right.

Tool Spotlight

Every week I’m testing out new tools, mostly AI tools, to see how they can help me better run my business. Over the past week, I’ve been playing around with a tool called Ideogram 2.0, and so far, it’s been great for creating visuals. Whether you need realistic photos, sleek designs or even something in 3D or anime style, this tool has you covered. It’s been super handy for my newsletter graphics, and I think it could really level up your brand’s visual game too. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Well, that's all for this issue. I hope you enjoyed it.

See you next Thursday.

Keep building,

A
